Marvin Minsky

Marvin Lee Minsky (natural August 9, 1927), sometimes dear called "Old Man Minsky", is an American scientist in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), co-founder of MIT's AI laboratory, & creator of many texts in AI and philosophy.

He was natural inside New York, where he attended The Fieldston School and Bronx High School of Science. He late attended Phillips Academy, in Andover, Massachusetts. He served in the US Navy in 1944-45. He holds the BA inside Math from either Harvard (1950) and the PhD in the equivalent field from either Princeton (1954). He has been on the MIT faculty since 1958. He is presently Toshiba Prof of Media Arts and Sciences, and Prof of electrical engineering and computer science, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He has been awarded numbers of honors. He occurs as member of two a U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. He won a Turing Award in 1969, the Japan Prize in 1990, the IJCAI Award for Research Excellence in 1991, and a Benjamin Franklin Medal in 2001.

Minsky's patents include the number one head-mounted graphic display (1963) too when the confocal scanning microscope (a predecessor to now's widely utilized confocal laser scanning microscope) and, jointly by using Seymour Papert, the 1st Logo "turtle". Minsky too built, around 1951, the 1st haphazardly wired neural network learning machine, SNARC.

He wrote a book Perceptrons (by having Seymour The. Papert), which became a foundational operate in the analysis of unreal neural networks. Its criticism of unrigorous search in the field hwhen been claimed as existence responsible the virtual disappearance of unreal neural networks from either academic locate in the Seventies.

Minsky was an consultant on the flick 2001: A Space Odyssey & is referred to in the movie and book,

When you took motion-picture photography, Minsky was just about flushed due to an accident, however survived.

Minsky was likewise responsible suggesting a underlying plot of "Jurassic Park" to Michael Crichton when you took a hike on the beach within Malibu. At that point in a meanderings which led to the classic novel & film, the dinosaurs were conceived when automata. Crichtin late drew on his biomedical how to training to conceive a dinosaurs when arising across cloning.

Minsky is an actor inside an artificial intelligence koan (attributed to his student, Danny Hillis) from a Jargon file:-
